We might on this occasion availourselves of the existing statistics, if they were not calculatedmislead, and, on the side of Homoeopathy, not sufficiently numeroOn this account we confine ourselves to short statements; if anyone should feel disposed to doubt their corre(;tnes8, we advise hbefore pronouncing judgment, to first treat a few dozen cas^^s ofpneumonia homoeopathically. An uncomplicated pneumonia, nomatter whether the patient is robust or weakly, always terminatesin recovery under homoeopathic treatment, at the same time as anabnormal dispersion or alteration of the infiltration occurs veryseldom. We can substantiate the correctness of this statement byupwards of two hundred and fifty cases of pneumonia from ourown practice and that of other physicians. Accordingly pneumoniais one of the least dangerous diseases to a homoeopathic physiciaOn the contrary, Wunderlich calls it one of the most frequent andmost dangerous diseases that can befal man ; in saying this he donot quote figures, but must have been lead by numerous deaths tomake such a statement. Among the complications, carditis,intestinal catarrh, bronchitis and tuberculosis promise the leastchances of a successful treatment. We have shown above why thefirst two complications present such ominous difficulties, althoueven in such cases we have never had to deplore a single loss.Bronchitis is dangerous on account of the dyspnoea being extremelaggravated by this complication; and a co-existing tuberculosisbecomes dangerous on account of the probability of the metamorphosis of the exuded fibrin into tubercles, or of the hastening osuppuration of existing tubercular depositions. Whether the seatof the inflammation exerts a peculiar influence during the presenthese complications, is not quite certain, but we may take it forgranted that an inflammation of the apices, which are the mostcommon locality of tubercular depositions, terminates in suppuratmuch sooner than an inflammation of any of the other lobes. Whenever pneumonia meets with morbid conditionsin the respiratory organs, its course generally deviates from thenormal line, and its process is much more destructive. This remarapplies principally to pulmonary emphysema, to stenosis of thelarynx, to chronic heart-disease, especially of the right heart.more these or any other affections aggravated the breathing beforthe supervention of pneumonia, the more dangerous they becometo life on account of the existing dyspnoea. As regards constitutional conditions not of a morbid kind, old age and pregnancy areof particular significance with regard to the prognosis. Old peopare often troubled with chronic catarrh and emphysema, to thepresence of which the danger in pneumonia is principally to beattributed. For all that, we ought not to despair too soon ; we cpoint to three old men between the years of seventy-eight andeighty-three, all of whom had chronic catarrh, and whom we curedof pneumonia after a somewhat protracted, but otherwise entirelyfavorable treatment. Pregnancy is exceedingly dangerous, themore so#the more advanced it is. Whether the danger is owing tothe obstructions in the respiration occasioned by the distendedabdomen, or likewise to the altered composition of the blood, weare unable to decide. If a miscarriage takes place, which is notunfrequently the case, death is almost unavoidable, on account ofthe excessive exhaustion. Such cases likewise afford a strikingpicture of the effects of venesection, for it is evident what a drious effect the loss of blood exerts upon the parturient woman,whereas parturition ought to diminish the dyspnoea and consequently lessen the danger. In order to meet objections, we willstate that we do not overlook the occurrence of two importantprocesses going on in the organism simultaneously with pneumoniaand that it is to these double functions that we attribute in a gmeasure the fatal termination.Our opinion of the success of homoeopathic treatment in complicated cases of pneumonia is to the effect that it is most commonland preeminently favorable, especially when contrasted with othermethods of treatment. We do not even except tubercular pneumonia.
