The local swelling is not very great, butpainful, intensely red, giving rise to the apprehension of pus foing in the joint ; it is not apt to shift about ; even if other jare affected, yet the original joint remains swollen and painful;breath is foul, the tongue has a thick, yellow coating, the appetis gone, every kind of food causes nausea. The skin is covered wicopious sudamina. The pains are worse every night, towardsmidnight, aggravated by severe cold and ameliorated by externalwarmth. The more frequently relapses set in, the more specially iMercurius indicated. In muscular rheumatism, Mercurius is indicated by the following circumstances: the pains exacerbate atnight, they are deep-seated as if the periosteum were attacked, wgreat sensitiveness to gentle as well as firm pressure. In compliing inflammations of vital organs, Mercurius deserves a leadingposition, in cardiac inflammation as well as in pneumonia and pleitis, likewise in meningitis.Rhus toxicodendron is adapted to every form of rheumatism, except arthritic. In acute articular rheumatism, it is indicated byfollowing symptoms: Violent fever, with tendency to the adynamictype, delirium and excessive restlessness; the swelling is inconsable, admits of some motion, is intensely red and somewhat sensitive to contact. The perspiration is not considerable. The patienare constantly changing their position, for even after lying forshort time in the same position, the pains are very much increaseFeather beds are intolerable, so is external artificial warmth. FRheuma. 637muscular rheumatism, Rhus tox. is the best remedy, if the attackcaused by exposure to wet; if the above-mentioned circumstanceseither improve or aggravate the symptoms ; if the pains at oncebecome associated with paralysis and contraction ; if the musclesof the lower extremities are the seat of the disease. Rheumaticparalysis particularly points to Hhus. In chronic articular rheumtism, Ehus is of little, if any use.
