In our opinion they will seldomaccomplish any real good, nor will they be required for the reasothat a delirium of the most varied forms does not constitute anyessential deviation from the normal course of typhus. [We do notagree with Beehr so far as Hyoscyamm is concerned. We knowfrom experience that an acute outbreak of typhus may yield toHyoscyamus. A robust merchant of about forty years came homewith a terrible headache. He had had a heavy chill in his counting-room which was very soon followed by fever. The cephalicdistress was principally located in one side of the head. Bryoniawas given. Next day delirium set in, with picking at the bedclothes; the patient was constantly talking about his business, awanted to leave his bed ; the prostration was very great, and helost flesh visibly ; the bowels were loose, the discharges Kavingoffensive smell. The patient was constantly troubled with thepaintings on the wall falling to one side. A drop of the tinctureof Hyoscyamus was mixed in half a tumbler of water, of which mixture a dessertspoonful was given him every two hours. After thesecond dose he dropped to sleep, and woke after a refreshing sleein full tide of recovery. H.]The same remarks apply to Opium ; this remedy is said to frequently have removed the deep sopor of typhus-patients; we haveTyphus. 699never been able to accomplish such a result by means of Opium.[A man had an attack of exan thematic typhus ; the fever had runsix weeks, and the patient seemed irretrievably lost. Towards theend of the sixth week the following symptoms had developed themselves: The patient was constantly settling down in his bed; theeyes were half closed, with the eye-balls turned upwards in theirsockets; depression of the lower jaw; strings of a ropy saliva wehanging out at the corners of the mouth; tongue thick and tremulous; involuntary stools; miliaria; excessive emaciation, complelethargy. A few drops of Muriatic Acid in half a tumbler ofwater re-awakened the sinking reaction. The paralytic symptomswere followed by a deep sopor. This was on the evening of theforty-first day. A drop of Opium was mixed in half a tumbler ofwater, of which mixture the patient took a dessertspoonful everytwo hours. Next morning, instead of the usual exacerbation asound sleep set in, which lasted with short interruptions, for awhole week. No further medicine was given. The patient droveout in a fortnight, perfectly well. In my opinion the Opium hada curative effect in this case.
