This indication is unreliable. Some timeago I was called to see a Catholic priest who, while visiting a min the country, was overtaken by a thunder-storm and was drenchedto the skin. In this condition he had to travel eight miles on hoback. Ifext day he was attacked with neuralgic rheumatism inthe upper third of the left upper arm. The pain was as if the bonand marrow were being ground into a thousand fragments. Afterhaving been treated allopathically for a whole week, with largedoses of Morphia, Quinine, etc., the patient was reduced to a shaby the pain, deprivation of sleep, etc. Being sent for, I found tarm apparently natural, but the sensitiveness so great that the lattempt to touch the affected limb, caused the patient to exclaimand shudder. The pain extorted agonizing cries. I made up mymind that Mercury was his remedy, of which he took the first centesimal trituration, a powder every hour. Already after the firstpowder the pain began to abate, and next morning he was completely relieved and went out again, two days after my firstvisit. H.]Puteatilia, according to Hartmann and others, is indicated in milsubacute rheumatism of the joints and muscles ; the affection shiabout frequently and speedily ; the pains exacerbate in the eveniand at night ; they are violent tearing, drawing and jerking painincreased by warmth, improved by cold, at least for a short time.Pulsatilla is seldom appropriate in chronic rheumatism, more so ithe rheumatism of muscles and of the joints. It is neither a reliremedy, nor one that can be often used for the reason that therheumatism to which Pulsatilla corresponds, is not of frequentoccurrence. [For rheumatism of the dorsum of the foot, Pulsatillais an excellent specific. A lady, seventy years of age, of a yieland rather phlegmatic temperament, had an attack of acute rheumatism of the dorsum of the right foot. It was very much swollen, red, excessively painful, and very sensitive to contact. The swelhad a shining appearance. The pain was much worse at night, and638 Constitutional Diseases without Definite Infection.deprived her of sleep ; the fever ran high. She had been sufferinin this way for three nights. I gave her six globules of Pulsatil18, dissolved in half a tumbler of water, to be taken in dessertspoonful doses every two houra. After the first dose already thepain moderated, she very soon fell asleep, perspired a little darthe night, and next morning was entirely free from pain, fever answelling. H.]Colchicum is not exactly a remedy for acnte rheumatism, but isexcellent in subacute affections of the joints and muscles, the enal parts of the former being chiefly affected. The fever is notviolent, mingled with constant chills, either without or with verlittle perspiration, the urine is saturated and deposits a copiousediment. The painful joints are neither red nor swollen; the paiincrease considerably at night or by motion and contact. The attacomes on in damp and cold weather.Tartarus emeticus deserves to be used more than it so far hasbeen ; it is one of those remedies that have a good effect in excingly painful local muscular rheumatism, for instance, rheumatismof the dorsal muscles contracted after a cold during the performhttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
