A tension, burning, and a marked sensationof swelling are experienced at a certain infiltrated spot, wherevesicles start up amid slight febrile motions and an unusual feelof lassitude. It breaks out without any symptoms ofgeneral disturbance; its appearance is accompanied by the burningpeculiar to all forms of herpes. If the vesicles are seated on thouter skin, superficial, bright-yellow scurfs form on the fifth dif seated on the inside of the prepuce, instead of vesicles we mahave superficial ulcers which occasionally become covered with thscurfs. The causes of this afiection are unknown ; what is positively known is that syphilis does not modify the course or charaof this form of herpes ; its frequent association with balanorrhohas led this to be regarded as the cause, whereas the reverse isthat herpes is the cause of a more copious secretion of smegma.Herpes preeputialis acquires its importance from the fact that iteasily mistaken for chancre, especially by lay-persons who had beinfected with chancre previously, and are now living in constantdread of constitutional syphilis.
