Traffic development and planning in Greater Hamburg
The most important problems are considered, determining in their entire conception
the development of today's situation of Hamburg as well as of the adjacent
regions of Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony and their influence upon
those regions in the years ahead .
The following questions are delt with
1 . Where do the regionally important crucial points of development up to the 19`"
century lie?
2 . The main features of planning and their results before the second world war .
3 . The planning conception, especially the problem of the developping axis and
their intermediate areas after 1945 .
4 . Actual problems since 1950 - their realization and therefrom resulting new
questions .
5 . Extension and new construction of federal arterial highways .
a) to Lübeck and Travemünde
b) to the south (Hannover, Nörten-Hardenberg) completed 1960
c) to the north (Flensburg, Kiel respectively) completed 1975, 1977 respectively .
6 . The meanwhile accomplished electrification of the railway line to Bremen, thus
shortening the travelling time to Buchholz .
7 . The new construction of the North-South-Canal respectively the Elbe-Lateral-Canal
(completed in 1976) . Construction of the new iron-ore-port
Hansaport .
8 . Building of a sewage water collector 'Nordheide', giving the possibility for
denser housebuilding (terminated) .
9 . Completion of the building of a sewage water collector 'West' (Schleswig-Holstein)
.
10 . Completion of the City-S-Bahn (rapid underground for the city) in order to
release the passenger-short-distance-traffic .
11 . Conception of the airport Kaltenkirchen (planning has been stopped ; airport
will not be built) .
12 . New construction of the Elbtunnel together with the western by-pass highway
of Hamburg (completed in 1975) .
13 . Conception of the deep water outer harbour 'Neuwerk' (planning has been
stopped, harbour Neuwerk will not be built) .
14 . Billwerder - conception of a new town ; for years an often discussed project,
then stopped and lately in planning and construction again, yet on a reduced
scale .
15 . Questions of industrial settlements in the extension of the harbour and energy
supply as a planning conception .
