An example from the bronze age shows a concentration of indications of settlement

The possibilities for studying waterways increase considerably during the iron
age and especially the Viking age . A written source that has been much discussed
is the account of a journey by Ottar from the 9th century .
Several attempts have been made to reconstruct Ottar's route from Sciringes
Heal in southern Norway to Haithabu in Schleswig . From this period a quite
large material of constructions in connection with sea transport is known . Wreck
finds i .a . show that the routes followed the shores closely .
With the growing loading capacity the ships were gradually forced to choose
new more off-coast routes . This change is evident in the material from the 13` h
century onward .
