Several methods have been devised to deal with the problem <strong>of</strong><br />

(b) when only annual totals exist. Methods (a) lead to quarterly figures<br />

inconsistent with annual totals. Methods (b) adds nothing to the economic<br />

interpretation <strong>of</strong> the quarterly phenomenon.<br />

Observers were stationed at <strong>of</strong>fshore sites to monitor and protect sea<br />

turtles during the explosive removal <strong>of</strong> oil and gas structures in waters <strong>of</strong><br />

the Gulf <strong>of</strong> Mexico. Comparisons <strong>of</strong> sighting rates and effective survey<br />

distances for day and night surveys suggested sea turtles moved closer to<br />

structure removal locations at night.<br />
