Statistical analysis <strong>of</strong> selection probabilities is examined from the<br />

standpoint <strong>of</strong> functional forms, methods for estimation and inference, and<br />

extensions <strong>of</strong> the statistical choice problem. Particular attention is given<br />

to multivariate choice, separability, and independence, and unsolved problems<br />

are discussed. The survey concludes with some economic applications <strong>of</strong> these<br />

choice models.<br />

A person chooses a community to live in and a type <strong>of</strong> dwelling to live<br />

in creating a two step estimation process; i.e. the probability <strong>of</strong> choosing a<br />

dwelling type given the choice <strong>of</strong> community. The independence from irrelevant<br />

alternatives problem is treated by McFadden's standard Generalized Extreme<br />

Value model by setting the correlations among the utilities associated with<br />

similar alternatives (Ã s ) to a constant. A fewer number <strong>of</strong> parameters can be<br />

estimated more efficiently, but the true correlation structure may be more<br />

complex than is represented by this simple solution.<br />

Diagnostic tests for omitted variables or functional misspecification in<br />

the multinomial logit (MNL) model can be performed conveniently by testing the<br />

significance <strong>of</strong> auxiliary regressions <strong>of</strong> residuals on included and excluded<br />

variables. In particular, Lagrange Multiplier (LM) and Hausman-McFadden (HM)<br />

tests <strong>of</strong> the Independence from Irrelevant Alternatives (IIA) Property on the<br />

MNL model can be carried out by the regression method using suitably defined<br />

excluded variables. Using this method, it is straightforward to test jointly<br />

against several sources <strong>of</strong> misspecification and to diagnose the structure <strong>of</strong><br />

deviations from the MNL model.<br />

The contingent valuation method for estimating the existence value <strong>of</strong><br />

natural resources is examined for psychophysical robustness, statistical<br />

reliability, and economic sensibility. Extensions <strong>of</strong> standard models for<br />

willingness to pay, and suitable econometric techniques for analyzing these<br />

models, are developed. The analysis is applied to a series <strong>of</strong> experiments on<br />

the value <strong>of</strong> preserving wilderness areas in the western United States. The<br />

results call into question the reliability <strong>of</strong> the CV method for estimating<br />

existence values.<br />
