Information needed and the steps involved in use <strong>of</strong> the model are<br />

presented in two sections. The first section provides user documentation and<br />

indicates the model's capabilities, General program structure, available<br />

options, data requirements, and an example problem are presented. The second<br />

section provides programmer documentation. Model algorithms are presented in<br />

detail and the <strong>fisheries</strong> system processes represented in each subroutine are<br />

The study was designed to assess the change in yield associated with<br />

existing state laws that prevent the landing <strong>of</strong> "small" white shrimp during<br />

the winter months. This evaluation has been accomplished using a yield per<br />

recruit analysis in which estimates <strong>of</strong> natural and fishing mortality, average<br />

initial number <strong>of</strong> shrimp recruited to the overwintering fishery, and the<br />

annual temperature regime with temperature and size dependent growth rate<br />

equation (Phares, 1980) have been combined.<br />

A simplistic discussion <strong>of</strong> the biology and the <strong>fisheries</strong> for shrimp from<br />

the Carolinas to Texas is presented. Primarily warm water species are<br />

included with limited discussions on the cold water species <strong>of</strong> shrimp. The<br />

commercial <strong>fisheries</strong> are described, but little economic information is<br />

included. The section on <strong>fisheries</strong> management outlines many <strong>of</strong> the problems<br />

facing shrimp managers and biologies, but does not indicate the root causes <strong>of</strong><br />

growth overfishing <strong>of</strong> shrimp or bycatch <strong>of</strong> finfish in the shrimp fishery.<br />

Overall, it is a good general discussion <strong>of</strong> the southeastern region shrimp<br />

fishery from a biological point <strong>of</strong> view.<br />

The Pacific Fisheries Information Network (PacFIN) consists <strong>of</strong> two main<br />

components: a management data base and a research data base. This document<br />

describes the content and design <strong>of</strong> the research data base. It traces the<br />

computerized method <strong>of</strong> combining individual fishery data files submitted by<br />

participating member states -- California, Oregon, and Washington -- into<br />

contiguous data file sets by year. This document was written as an<br />

encompassing description for user and programmer. Thus, it contains<br />

generalized schemes complemented by specific tables outlining their exact<br />

Results <strong>of</strong> the shrimp trawl bycatch study workshop indicate that the<br />

correct bycatch ratio is three to four pounds <strong>of</strong> finfish to one pound <strong>of</strong><br />

shrimp. Testing <strong>of</strong> proposed bycatch reduction devices have indicated that<br />

gear modifications can reduce bycatch by as much as one-third.<br />
