The impact <strong>of</strong> shrimp imports on ex-vessel prices is discussed using the<br />

results <strong>of</strong> five different econometric studies. The paper reviews domestic<br />

production <strong>of</strong> all shrimp species from U.S. waters. It presents trends in<br />

shrimp imports by product type from 1970 to 1981 including marketing channels<br />

and retailing activities, and impacts on employment and capital invested in<br />

the harvesting sector <strong>of</strong> the shrimp fishery.<br />

Size and abundance <strong>of</strong> pink shrimp (Penaeus duorarum) in and around the<br />

Tortugas sanctuary in the Gulf <strong>of</strong> Mexico were surveyed monthly from September<br />

1981 through July 1983. Samples were not taken in April and June 1983.<br />

Shrimp size varied widely at most stations and abundance varied between<br />

stations, but the average size increased with increasing depth and abundance<br />
