FREEEAST TURKISTAN SYMPOSIUMoppressed East Turkestani people by placing sanctions on China, even thoughthe Chinese have the right to a veto in the Council. The regions hit by the recentcrisis, particularly Urumqi, should be immediately opened to inspection by theinternational community and world public opinion; the entry of humanitarianaid to the region should be secured. The decisions and attitudes of the abovementionedmechanisms will be largely shaped by the stance taken up by countrieswhich have political and economic relations with China. This attitude mustinclude a historical responsibility.Human rights violations in China, in particular the restrictions on the rightto life and the freedom of worship, have caused concern in the Islamic world. The suppression of the East Turkestan problem for the sake of economic andcommercial benefits with China is upsetting to Muslim people. Therefore, thegovernments of Muslim countries should stand united on the East Turkestanissue. The Organization of the Islamic Conference should immediately meet andurge member countries and other countries to review their political and economicrelations with China, bringing them into favor of the people of East Turkestan.China needs the Islamic world as an economic market. A victory in this issue willhelp strengthen the Islamic union.Turkey has the position and the ability to urge the Islamic world to takeaction. It should review political and economic cooperation with China in orderto protect the rights and liberties of the people of East Turkestan and it shouldtake up the position of observer for East Turkestan.International mechanisms have now lost their ability to function andinternational law is no longer a solution; this situation is even more threateningto world peace than nuclear armament. We, as people with a responsibility tohumanity, have organized this symposium to contribute to the resolution of theEast Turkestan question, which we regard to be a problem of all humanity. Actingin accordance with the principle that any policy which renders people helpless orcauses them to suffering, no matter where or by whom it is committed, is a crimeagainst humanity, we call on all the relevant authorities to take the necessaryactions and do whatever they can to establish justice.270
