Chinese immigrants who settle in the region are upsetting thedemography of the region to the detriment of the Turkic population, and this inturn results in serious social problems. Such problems can be listed as follows:7. 2. 1. Due to intensive immigration, the Turkic people in East Turkistanhave been deprived of fertile lands and face problems in employment, education,culture and security, which are growing with every passing day.7. 2. 2. The unemployment problem in the Uyghur Turks has been aggravateddue to intensive immigration into the region. Many people are losing their jobsdue to the privatization of public enterprises. It is often impossible for universitygraduates to find a job, which results in an increased number of unemployedyoungsters, and thus an increase in crimes such as prostitution, drug trafficking,robbery and fraud.7. 2. 3. In order to give momentum to the Sinicization of young Uyghurs, thetension between the young Uyghurs who have been forced to migrate to innerparts of China and Chinese youngsters is increasing day by day, thus paving theway for potential social conflict. The conflict between the Uyghur workers andthe Chinese workers in Shaoguan, which ignited the incidents in Urumchi on 5July, 2009, was a result of this policy.7. 3. In addition to this intensive immigration policy, the restriction on birthsis still being severely implemented in the region, despite serious objections.Although the Chinese administration claims that they have implemented such abirth policy in order to “increase the quality of the nation”, to “increase the welfareof people of the region”, “for development of the region”, and “for the good ofUyghur Turks”, it is obvious that the actual goal is to keep the Turkic populationunder control and to increase the Chinese (Han) population in the region.7. 4. The nuclear tests deliberately conducted by the Chinese administration inEast Turkistan have resulted in various diseases and serious medical conditions inthe region, such as hepatitis, cancer, and birth defects.7. 5. The Chinese administration, which banned education in the Uyghurlanguage, which had been the norm until the 1990s, replacing it with educationin Chinese, has restricted the educational rights and opportunities of the Turkicpopulation in East Turkistan. Although the Chinese government claims that284
