It alsopublishes more than 20 daily newspapers and journals domestically.The People’s Daily Newspaper is an official newspaper that is directlycontrolled by the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party; itwas established on June 15, 1948. The Chinese government claims that thisnewspaper is one of the top ten influential newspapers in the world. On June 20,2008, marking the 60 th anniversary of the establishment of the newspaper, theChinese president, Hu Jintao, paid a special visit to the workers of the newspaper.Hu Jintao stated that at this turn of a new historical era, the newspaper was thespiritual force and ideological weapon of the state.Chinese Central Television Station was established on the May 1, 1958as “Beijing Television Station”. It started broadcasting on the September 2,and continued broadcasting under the name of the Chinese Central TelevisionStation on May 1, 1978. CCTV, which is the largest television station in China,has 26 regular, 12 paid and 28 internet television channels, making a total of56 television channels. The total number of workers at the station is more than10,000; 4,317 of these are members of the Communist Party. The CCTV hasrepresentative offices in 14 regions in the world, and has agreements with 208media corporations in 134 countries.515
