We feelthat pain and suffering collectively, but we are able to do nothing to stop it. Beingable to do nothing is probably the worst pain. It is said that human beings neededucation to learn mercy. Human beings need to treat one another as humanbeings. It is unacceptable to abolish the lives of nations and to simply massacrethem because of strategic interests, future concerns, uranium wars, etc...’We aregeographically removed from East Turkistan, but our hearts are not that far.Incidents in East Turkistan are closely followed by our nation and we feel theirpain very deeply in our hearts, we pray for them, but grieve deeply that we areunable to do anything. I hope that common sense will prevail and that thosepeople who mobilize their efforts to save the life of a whale in the North Polewill also attain the level of sensitivity from which they can care for the lives ofthousands of people in Turkistan.” 18The UN High Commissioner of Human Rights, Navi Pillay, said he wasconcerned over the loss of lives that occurred in the incidents. 19The EU Presidency stated that they felt deep concerns over the incidents inUrumchi and heavily condemned the loss of lives, calling for a peaceful resolutionof the issue.The Organisation of Islamic Conference stated that the organisation wasconcerned over the use of disproportionate force during the incidents and urgedChina to approach the problems and issues of the Muslim minority in thecountry from a wider perspective that would deal with the underlying causes ofthe aforementioned problems and issues. The secretary general of the OIC, Dr.Ekmelettin Ihsanoglu, stated that the OIC was deeply disturbed by the fact thatthe Uyghur people were forced to live in a climate of terror, underlining the factthat the problems of Uyghur people cannot be solved merely through securitymeasures and adding that the OIC would commit itself to continue to follow upthe incidents closely. 20The White House spokesman, Robert Gibbs, expressed the sorrow and deepconcern the USA felt concerning the loss of lives in East Turkistan. 21 The USSecretary of State, Hillary Clinton also stated that America was deeply concernedover the incidents. 22356
