The Middle Way Approach - A Solution for the Tibetan Issue / Tseten Samdup Chhoekyapaperiod in our history. Emphasizing the need of universal responsibility in aworld that is becoming increasingly interdependent has won him worldwideacclaim. His Holiness has followed the same principles in finding a solutionto the Tibetan issue. Since 1979 the Dalai Lama has tried to find a mutuallybeneficial and acceptable solution based on the Middle Path Approach, notseeking independence, but rather a genuine autonomy in accordance with theprinciples and provisions of the Chinese constitution. The Special Meeting of Tibetans from all over the world in November 2008in Dharamsala reconfirmed the continuation of the dialogue with Beijing on thebasis of the Middle Path Approach. His Holiness the Dalai Lama has repeatedly stated that he has no personaldemands to make nor is he seeking independence for Tibet or ‘semi-independence’or ‘independence in disguised form’. The Chinese leadership should work with HisHoliness the Dalai Lama to find a mutually acceptable solution to the Tibetanproblem. This will ensure stability, unity and the development of a harmonioussociety.Demonstrations in Tibet touched a raw nerve in Beijing and brought tolight the Communist Party’s lack of democratic legitimacy. China has no morallegitimacy in Tibet. Legitimacy must be earned by responding positively to HisHoliness the Dalai Lama’s call for genuine autonomy for the Tibetan people.381
