The Future in East Turkistan / Fahmy Howeidimany interruptions in the phased targets over time; what is important isthat they do not give up on the final goal.· There should be efforts made to keep the issue of East Turkistan in currentmemory; in other words, if this territory cannot be realistically recovered,then it should be kept fresh in the memory of future generations; this canonly be achieved by documented histories, by facts and by the maps ofthis country being published in various languages, to be distributed to therightful heirs to this land and to those who support them.· To try to hurry this process will only damage it and can in no way serve itwell; if this situation continues in future generations, then more attentionmust be paid to the identity and memory of these generations. They willhave to be provided with educational opportunities at universities in theArabic and Islamic world, in countries like Malaysia, Pakistan, or the Al-Azhar University in Egypt, for example.· It is of utmost importance that there is communication with the mediaand human rights organizations; these are the platforms which will bringthe presence of this problem into the public opinion and also underline itsimportance.· A special effort should be made to clarify the objectives of those who aredefending the case of Turkistan; at the moment these objectives shouldbe: respect for human rights, autonomy, religious identity, the cessation ofviolence and terrorism, refusal to accept separation, and efforts to upholdthe right of citizenship with dignity.(3)There are more points of strength which can be used to serve the cause ofTurkistan; some of these points include the following:· The Turkic Muslim world; East Turkistan does not stand alone; ratherthere is a large community of people offering support.· The persecuted minority is not in a very different situation than that ofthe people of Tibet, who have an important presence in the international581
