FREEEAST TURKISTAN SYMPOSIUMMoyencor Khan (747-759). Moyencor took the neighboring Turkic states andpeoples under his control, and extended the borders of his lands until Sir-Derya,on the west. As a result of his fierce attacks, China was forced to pay annual taxes.The influence of the Uyghur Khanate on China continued even during the reignof the later Khans, and in response to the coercive pressure of Alp Bilge Khan theChinese emperor gave his daughter to the khan in marriage. 6After the death of Alp Bilge Khan in 821 the Uyghur state gradually lost itspower and authority. It suffered serious harm when the Kyrgyz warriors attackedthe capital city of Karabalsagun and massacred the khan and a large majority ofthe population in 840. The Kansu Uyghur State (The Yellow Uyghur), whichwas established thereafter, and the Turfan Uyghur State continued to rule somecities of the state; however, they were unable to become a hegemonic power of theregion. The last Uyghur state collapsed as a result of the Mongol invasion in 1209.An important part of the history of Eastern Turkistan consists of theKarahanlilar. The Karahanlilar was the first Turkish state to accept Islam as awhole; they began to rapidly establish cities. The founder of the state was BilgeKül Kadir Khan, who changed his name to Abdülkerim Satuk Buğra Khan afterconverting to Islam. The Yabgu of Karluk, who were formerly affiliated with theUyghur Khanate, declared independence in the Yedisu and Kashgar regions; theybecame known as the Karahan (the Dark Khan) after the Uyghur state collapsedin 840. This state, which ruled the whole of Turkistan, both East and West,reigned for 372 years over a wide geography from the Aral Lake to China andMongolia to the east, but finally collapsed in 1212. In 1042 the Karahanlilar Statewas divided into two parts, East and West, and its final collapse was caused by theMongol invasion. From 1218 to 1679, after the reign of Genghis Khan, includingthe era of Tamburlaine, who captured the region in 1365, Eastern Turkistan wasruled under the name of the Jagatai Khanate.The Jagatai Khanate, which ruled Turkistan and the vicinity for an extendedperiod of time, was established on the lands left by Genghis Khan to his sonJagatai Khan. Genghis Khan shared his lands out among his sons and gave a largepart of Transoxiana, the Kara Hitay lands and Kashgar in Eastern Turkistan tohis son Jagatai. The state, which was established in 1277, continued until 1370.Mubarek Shah, who acceded to the throne in 1266, was the first Muslim Jagatai292
