My response was simple. “Which Chinais President Obama going to visit?” In fact, I often asked “which China?” whenI was interviewed about China, and reporters were often puzzled: Didn’t we allknow that we were only talking about mainland China, not Taiwan? Of course,I was not trying to distinguish “mainland China” from “Taiwan” when I askedthis question. Then, why did I still ask such questions? That is what I want totalk about today: Geographically there is only one entity of mainland China,but politically, economically, sociologically, and even sentimentally, it has largelybroken into two different Chinas.We have not forgotten the pro-democracy movement of 1989, which stoodagainst profiteering, corruption, and stood for democracy and freedom. Thatmovement aimed to rid itself of a corrupt dictatorship and thus create a fair,reasonable, and prosperous society. This movement was widespread, and broughtunprecedented public awareness to human rights and democracy. Althoughthe Chinese Communist regime cracked down on that movement, life was nolonger the same for the rulers. The regime had to face a completely differentdomestic and international environment and had resort to new tactics to meet its“overwhelming” need for stability.Amid its legitimacy crisis, the Communist regime summed up the lessonslearned from the failure of the dictatorship. It decided to capitalize on the darkand evil side of human nature.
