East Turkistan After July 5/ Seyit Tumturkthey were not alone, referring to the Saadet Party as “a Party whose origin isunknown”. 15 Dr. Oya Akgonench, the deputy chairman of the foreign relationsdepartment of the party , responded to the Chinese calumny concerning theÇağlayan Demonstrations as follows: “250 NGOs, representing all politicaltendencies and thought, sports organisations, trade unions and charity foundationsparticipated in the demonstration. The Çağlayan demonstration was the reactionof the Turkish society in order to express the anger and sorrow of the Turkish peopleand to call for a “STOP” to the oppression. The Chinese officer who preparedthis declaration apparently does not yet have good knowledge of Turkey, wherehe works or has started to work, obviously without receiving any prior briefing.Otherwise, he would not have revealed his lack of knowledge and experience bydefining a group that is very well known domestically and internationally as the“National Vision” and which has the strongest ideological base among all politicalparties in Turkey as “a political party whose origin is unknown.” 16One of the NGOs to give the strongest reaction to the Urumchi massacrewas the IHH Humanitarian Aid Foundation. The IHH Humanitarian AidFoundation called on the UN, the OIC and Turkey to help prevent the Chineseoppression against the Uyghur Turks in East Turkistan. The chairman of theIHH Humanitarian Aid Foundation, Bulent Yildirim, and representativesof the foundation held a press conference concerning the Urumchi incidents.Yıldırım stressed that Turkey should convince the OIC to hold a session to stopthe oppression urgently, and stated that a boycott should be imposed againstChinese products, which are in great demand in Muslim countries, and said “Iam calling on the world, on the Arab world, on the Turkish world, on all NGOs,on international organisations and on any individual country! You also need toexhibit the very sensitivity you have shown to Gaza towards East Turkistan. Addto this all the people who were killed in Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya, Palestine,Cashmere and Bosnia within the last century, and multiply it by 10; the numberof people killed in East Turkistan is more than this” in order to underline thatthe UN, OIC and the Arab League should take action or the oppression wouldcontinue. 17The Presidency of Religious Affairs in Turkey also reacted strongly againstthe Urumchi Massacre. The chairman of the Department of Religious Affairs inTurkey, Dr. Ali Bardakoğlu, expressed his feelings as follows: “I hope that those355
