Eastern Turkistan after the Cold War and 9/11 A Critical Study of the Chinese Theses and Policies/ Dr Akram Hicazi1) The war against religion between Chinese government control andinternational controlSince the 1300s the Chinese have known that the people of Turkistan areMuslim. 10 They also know that the people of Turkistan have carried the flag ofIslam to China, and that Islam is something that they are devoutly committed to.They keep their Islam and at a time when they made great advances, during an agewhen Islam was leading in the sciences, arts, architecture, morality, human valuesand understanding, the Mongols who were exploiting the region also started tobelieve to Islam. Muslims became known by the word Chantu, which means“turbaned men” in Chinese. 11 The Chinese are also aware that historically andculturally Turkistan has contributed to Islam, renewed it, and produced scholarsin hadith, Islamic jurisprudence and languages, people who had a clear influencein spreading and preserving Islam. 12 Another thing that the Chinese are awareof is that Islam was the only historical factor that withstood foreign attacks inthe region. Islam is a phenomenon that cannot be eliminated from the mind ofthe Muslims, both those inside and outside Eastern Turkistan. As history showsand and as Hamevi said: the people of Turkistan people are “hardy, courageous,resilient, brave, strong” people. These characteristics are enough to make theone who possesses them a mighty adversary. Even if such an adversary could bedefeated due to their being taken unaware, this is not one who will surrender 13 . Asthe Chinese have discovered through experience, today they fear this character;this will continue in the future. Perhaps this fact can explain to us some of thesecrets of the violence that is being wielded both demographically and ethnicallyby China on the people living in the region.A) Government controlIn the past, operations of ethnic cleansing happened in China behind animpenetrable curtain. In the era of Mao Tse-tung (1949-1976), Islam wasbanned and war was declared against it. The war was conducted under the slogan“Renounce the teachings of the Qur’an!” No one outside the country heard aboutthese events or the moans of the victims during this period. This event continuedto go on in a terrible silence, despite there being no apparent justification for it.There was just one reason. To wipe the people of Turkistan off the map and thusto be rid of them, their history and their culture, once and for all. This is the319
