The Chinese authorities startedto follow all the Uyghur people in Turkistan and all those outside, attempting toinclude any Uyghur foundations that argued that the people of Turkistan havethe right to a humane life in accordance with international laws as members ofterrorist groups. China imposed political and economic pressure on neighboringcountries so that they would prohibit the Uyghur people from carrying out anypolitical, scientific or social activities in these countries. Pakistan closed downthe waqf dormitories where poor people and pilgrims could stay in Rawalpindi.Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan closed down the Uyghur cultural foundations and thechairmen of some of these foundations were assassinated. China put pressure onneighboring countries to deport all Uyghur students who were studying in thosecountries. After the Shanghai Agreement, the deportations of people from EastTurkistan out of Central Asian countries increased and the political activities ofUyghur people in West Turkistan were put under greater pressure. The Uyghurpeople are now not able to enter these countries as political refugees, and manyUyghur students and refugees have been deported from Pakistan, Kazakhstanand Kyrgyzstan; these were executed without any hearing immediately after theyarrived in China.2. Uyghur activists in Europe accused of being terroristsRealizing that it is not geographically close enough to the United States orEuropean countries, such as the Netherlands, Switzerland or Belgium - where alarge number of Uyghur refugees and immigrants live - China initiated a smearcampaign against the Uyghur people in these countries. China took advantageof the phenomenon of Islamophobia, which had become rife in Europe after theattack of 9/11; it was claimed that Uyghur refugees were terrorists. The Chinesegovernment has accused four Turkistan organizations and 11 Uyghur refugees ofterrorist actions.Although Uyghur activists tried to declare their own government-in-exile inthe United States, the Chinese accusations resulted in the arrest and imprisonmentwithout any proper trial of some Uyghurs in Guantanamo.
