FREEEAST TURKISTAN SYMPOSIUMfrequently enough, the ongoing human rights violations in the region are indeedurgent and serious enough to stir up the entire world. To expect governments andthe United Nations (considering that China is a founding member of SecurityCouncil with voting rights) to come up with a solution is a forlorn hope. Eventhough the people of East Turkistan, dispersed and oppressed, are trying to makethe world aware of their sufferings, despite extremely challenging conditions andlimited opportunities, and even though Amnesty International and the HumanRights Watch have released two reports a year, the interest of the internationalsociety has yet to be attracted. Economic relations with China and commercialconcerns play an important role in determining the policies of governments inthis issue. This indeed is not something that is totally foreign to us. Humanityhas passed through the same test in Palestine, Iraq, Bosnia, Chechnya andAfghanistan; this will continue. It is a pity that human rights have been sacrificedto the benefits of government interests, despite the existence of long-windeddocuments on human rights. Countries who are members of the “Union ofInterest” prefer to remain silent in the case of humanitarian problems that havebeen raised with other member states; so is it surprising that they are less thansensitive to a human rights problem experienced in a non-member country?The position of the USA in regard to the situation in China constitutes agood example of this situation.Non-governmental organizations in East Turkistan struggleNon-governmental organizations conduct activities in various spheres of thelife. Non-governmental organizations can do a lot for the people of East Turkistanwho experience problems in political, social, cultural, economic and almost in allfields. Nevertheless, the obstacles before people of East Turkistan for establishingcivil social structuring and organization primarily on human rights and the roleof these non-governmental organizations constitute the main topic of this study.We will try to analyze non-governmental organizations under three main topicsin East Turkistan struggle. In first category, we will analyze organization of thenon-governmental organizations in China and the problems encountered bythese organizations. Secondly, we will evaluate non-governmental organizationssupporting East Turkistan in its struggle and also we will evaluate the position of524
