Also, many countries, in particularArab-Muslim countries, have close relations with China, and this helps Chinagrow in power and influence to become the strategic equivalent of the UnitedStates. The United States has problems with these countries, which is easy tounderstand against the backdrop of the Arab-Israeli conflict.The road to freedom and self-determination for East Turkestan requires agreat deal of effort, an awareness of the reality of power and lessons from history.The standpoint of any side in the conflict or in negotiations depends on their ownstrength and the strength of their allies. The realization of any progress dependson the elements of control that are available for each party and how skilled theyare in determining their present and future objectives. I believe that a better futurefor East Turkestan can be attained by supporting self-governance for the EastTurkestan people and their organizations at home and abroad. This relies on thefollowing:· Improving their economic, political, humanitarian and culturalsituation. This requires urging China to provide the Turks with amplejob opportunities in various economic areas and to avoid discriminationagainst Turks in employment and investments.· The opening of representative trade offices of Islamic countries in EastTurkestan.· Stimulating businessmen to support trade with East Turkestan and togrant them priority when importing from China for institutions andfactories which employ Turks. This will push businesses and businessowners within East Turkestan and China to employ Turks.· Incessantly demanding that China respect the human, cultural andreligious rights of the Turks. This is something which is guaranteed, intheory, by the Chinese constitution and the law on regional autonomywithin China.· Discussing with China the possibility of establishing consulates of Islamiccountries within East Turkestan, as well as opening offices of Islamicorganizations, such as the Organization of the Islamic Conference, theMuslim World League and relief committees, and the opening of branches574
