FREEEAST TURKISTAN SYMPOSIUMOn the very same day, China welcomed an important foreign guest, namelyAbdullah Gül, the president of the Republic of Turkey. Gül, who paid a visit tothe capital of East Turkistan, Urumchi, was warmly welcomed by Chinese andUyghur officials, and the tension was not high. The employment rate among even universitygraduates is less than 10% for the Uyghur people of East Turkistan, while this rateis around 90% for Chinese students. The quota allocated to Uyghur people in thecivil-servant recruitment examinations set by the Government is incredibly low, whereas the departments that recruit Chinese people have a much greater number.Ethnic discrimination and isolation have reached saturation level. Not onlyhave young Uyghurs (most of them being young single Uyghur girls) been forced350
