Three Chinas / Dr Yang Jianlishareholders of China, Inc. have impressed many observers with their prodigiouswealth accumulation and astonishing growth rates, making those same observersbelieve that one-party dictatorship is good for economic growth. By the sametoken, these shareholders also control all the channels of the information flow anddominate the public discourse. They can make their voices loud enough so theoutside observers believe that they represent China, that they are China -the wholeof China. The truth is, there is another society named China, a society constitutedof over a billion Chinese who are virtually slave-laborers working for China, Inc.There you go, on one side of the coin is the elite Corporate China; and theother side is what we call “the China of shitizens.” That is spelled “S-H-I-T-I-Z-E-N-S.”In any country, different groups of people enjoy different levels of wealth andhave different levels of influence. But this typically does not polarize a countryinto two opposing societies. But even though you cannot find the word “shitizen”in an official elite Corporate China language, here is an illustrative Chinese story:On October 29, 2008, 8:00 pm, a governmental official, Party secretary Lin,violently harassed an 11-year-old girl in front of her parents on a busy street inShenzhen, one of the most “modernized” cosmopolitan cities in China. When thegirl’s parents tried to stop him and passersby protested against him, he shouted“How dare you get in my way? Do you guys know who I am? I am a representativefrom the central Ministry of Transportation in Beijing. I rank as high as yourmayor in the government. You guys are as dispensable and worthless as a piece ofshit in front of me.” The incident and Secretary Lin’s language quickly circulatedon the internet, and since then numerous people have sarcastically begun callingthemselves “Chinese shitizens” to show their discontent and despair.Here is how elite China and the China of shitizens’ diverge:1. Elite China possesses all of the political, economic, and social and culturalresources. Members of this elite are a gang that runs China, Inc. This is verydifferent from how a democratic country operates and it is also different than anyright-wing authoritarian countries (such as pre-democracy Taiwan).2. The rules of the game at all levels in China are set by the filthy elite. Theelite also officiates the games. The outcome of any conflict between elite society549
