The emergence of centralized China is another opportunity. 2/3 ofthe countries in the world have already adopted a democratic system.The remaining 1/3, including China, are still far from democracy. Theemergence of China will bring political, economic and security problemsto many countries, whereas the centralist system of China is also a targetof criticism, due to issues such as Tibet and East Turkistan. In otherwords, as China emerges the East Turkistan issue will emerge too.Threats against East Turkistan1. The most important threat is the increasing influence of emerging Chinaon the international society, which might limit the capability of EastTurkistan to maneuver in the international arena.2. Adoption of a system of democracy by China -though partially- due tothe pressure of international society, and particularly in relation to anamendment to the election system in China, may blight the independenceideals of East Turkistan. The demographic structure of East Turkistan ischanging and the Chinese population is increasing; the cultural tissue ofEast Turkistan is decaying and an identity crisis is underway.D. The future of East Turkistan in accordance withthe SWOT analysis methodThe SWOT analysis method defines the strong and weak points of EastTurkistan, as well as the opportunities and threats in the region; the four differentstrategic approach models of this analysis method will enable us to understandthe strategic approach angle of East Turkistan; that is, East Turkistan is suitablefor the WO strategic approach model, which includes weaknesses as well asopportunities. According to the SWOT analysis method, the people of EastTurkistan do not suit the most ideal model -SO; this indicates that the people ofEast Turkistan have much to do on the path to independence.The WO strategic approach model states that the people of East Turkistanshould use their strategic sources very efficiently and effectively. It seemscompulsory that to compensate for the weaknesses the external opportunitiesshould be employed to the maximum. Negative consequences may appear unless570
