The Struggle in East Turkistan and Non-Governmental Organizations / Atty Gulden Sonmezface of common attitudes of the NGOs which will reflect the conscience of thepeople; the NGOs need to come together to work to establish justice in society.The improved functionality and an increase in the role of NGOs in the UNsystem and the inclusion of many human right problems in various reports preparedby the NGOs will force governments to look for solutions. Governments mustrevise and correct their practices, amending their national legal systems. Chinais probably the country with the lowest rate among all UN member countries interms of response to criticism raised in the international arena. However, NGOsmust maintain their efforts, as this has been proven to be effective.According to international legal documents which address all of humanity, thesystematic violations inflicted by China against the people of East Turkistan can becategorized as crimes of humanity (we have not included Tibet and other regionsthat are suffering in this article, as here we are only discussing East Turkistan).It must be remembered that ignoring international law and committing crimesagainst humanity create a real threat to the whole of humanity; we need onlyexamine the actions of Israel.East Turkistan is not an internal problem for China; rather, it is the problemfor all of humanity. China should permit NGOs and non-profit organizations tooperate and the Chinese government should respond positively to all demandsraised in this matter.The United Nations should support the victims in East Turkistan and imposesanctions against China; these sanctions will help to prevent further violationsof human rights and eliminate/the restrictions and prohibitions inflicted uponNGOs. NGOs and the UN Security Council should apply to the InternationalCourt of Human Rights and other international jurisdiction mechanisms to tryChina for their crimes against humanity, in particular those committed duringthe genocide in Urumchi.International mechanisms must be mobilized to enable humanitarian aid toget to inner East Turkistan; China should respect such demands.Chinese people who support justice and human rights have a greatresponsibility. A determined and unified pressure should be created to bring downthe barriers that stand in the way of organization and the right of expression; in539
