FREEEAST TURKISTAN SYMPOSIUMarena, even though they are relatively fewer in number.· The Soviet republics of Central Asia have emerged from Sovietdomination, setting a precedent that encourages the Muslims of EastTurkistan to claim human rights, at least those of autonomy.· China has major economic interests with the Arab world, which isconsidered to be the most important market for its goods; if there is alink between the economic interests of China and the fair treatment ofthe Muslims in Turkistan, that is, ensuring that they are able to maintaintheir religious identity and their human rights, this would be a majorachievement. To use these interests against the Chinese authoritiescan only be achieved after solidarity with their brothers in Turkistan isaccepted by the Arab world.(4)What can we do?Nothing that is right can be lost merely by making demands; this meansthat rights will not be lost if the owner stands up for them and is not willingto relinquish them; what is necessary is that this issue remains alive and on theagenda. First the issue must be brought to the mind of the Turkistan people, then that of the Arab and Muslim people, and finally into international arenaswhenever possible. And what must be understood here is that the media is the most importantmeans to make the public aware of this situation; there is no question thattelevision has become one of the most influential instruments of public opinion. If a television channel were to take up the cause of the people of Turkistan andpresent the facts of the suffering of these people, this would be an important stepin this direction. I do not know if such a channel is available at the present time, but I do know that there is not one in the Arab world; if the burden of establishingsuch a channel cannot be taken up with the available resources, then at leasta weekly program from a Turkish channel can be broadcast in three languages:Turkish, English and Arabic. If only the Turkish and the new Arabic channelswere to add this idea to its programs.582
