personal and cultural considerations that motivate the reader in choosing among<br />

interpretive alternatives.<br />

These insights are presented to the representatives of the teachers and milieus,<br />

and to the extent that they are persuaded that modern hermeneutic thought replicates<br />

interpretive strategies rooted in classical exegesis, they may be further motivated to<br />

adopt these reading strategies in their teaching.<br />

Chapter 5: The analysis of reading strategies in the deliberative setting is not a goal in<br />

and of itself, but rather a step in preparing theory for practice. This deliberation began<br />

with the process of problemation, and the problems cited in the first chapter must be<br />

juxtaposed to the reading "theories" that have been examined. The bulk of the<br />

problems are rooted in the conflict between the assumptions and values of modern<br />

consciousness and those that attend the phenomenon of miracle. It would appear that<br />

the dialogical approach may provide particularly effective ways not only of resolving<br />

this conflict, but of satisfying the religious "hunger for wonders" (Holtz and Rauch).<br />

The leading proponent of this approach is Martin Buber, and we will examine in<br />

depth his reading of biblical miracle stories and its roots in his dialogic hermeneutical<br />

approach.<br />

Buber`s dialogic approach is clearly exemplified in his interpretation of biblical<br />

miracles and of the stories in which they appear. In his emphasis on the experience of<br />

the miracle, Buber shows how the participant or witness carries on a dialogue with the<br />

surrounding events. In Buber`s opinion, the unique situation that is described in<br />

supernatural terms does not in fact deviate from the norms of nature and history, but<br />

the witness experiences it as a wondrous event, and his "objective enthusiasm" is his<br />

share in the dialogue that is taking place. As to the reader, he is called upon to pay<br />

close attention to verbal clues that impart hidden meanings, such as key words, in<br />
