personal and cultural considerations that motivate the reader in choosing among
interpretive alternatives.
These insights are presented to the representatives of the teachers and milieus,
and to the extent that they are persuaded that modern hermeneutic thought replicates
interpretive strategies rooted in classical exegesis, they may be further motivated to
adopt these reading strategies in their teaching.
Chapter 5: The analysis of reading strategies in the deliberative setting is not a goal in
and of itself, but rather a step in preparing theory for practice. This deliberation began
with the process of problemation, and the problems cited in the first chapter must be
juxtaposed to the reading "theories" that have been examined. The bulk of the
problems are rooted in the conflict between the assumptions and values of modern
consciousness and those that attend the phenomenon of miracle. It would appear that
the dialogical approach may provide particularly effective ways not only of resolving
this conflict, but of satisfying the religious "hunger for wonders" (Holtz and Rauch).
The leading proponent of this approach is Martin Buber, and we will examine in
depth his reading of biblical miracle stories and its roots in his dialogic hermeneutical
approach.
Buber`s dialogic approach is clearly exemplified in his interpretation of biblical
miracles and of the stories in which they appear. In his emphasis on the experience of
the miracle, Buber shows how the participant or witness carries on a dialogue with the
surrounding events. In Buber`s opinion, the unique situation that is described in
supernatural terms does not in fact deviate from the norms of nature and history, but
the witness experiences it as a wondrous event, and his "objective enthusiasm" is his
share in the dialogue that is taking place. As to the reader, he is called upon to pay
close attention to verbal clues that impart hidden meanings, such as key words, in
