3. Insert the SharePoint Portal Server CD into your CD-ROM drive.
4. Type cd\ and then press Enter.
5. Navigate to the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive.
6. For help with the setup command line parameters, type setup /?, and then
press Enter.
7. Do one of the following:
■ To install SharePoint Portal Server with the database engine, type setup
/q /o INSTALLMODE=1 PIDKEY=CD_key and then press Enter.
■ To install SharePoint Portal Server without the database engine, type setup
/q /o INSTALLMODE=0 ACCOUNTNAME=DOMAIN\user_name
ACCOUNTPASSWORD=password PIDKEY=CD_key and then press
Enter.
Note Ensure that the CD_key has no dashes in it; otherwise, setup might
fail.
It is recommended that you turn on verbose logging by adding the following
parameter to either of the above: /L*V path_to_log_file.
To monitor progress, open Task Manager and view MasterSetupApp running
in the Applications tab.
Table 3-4 shows the parameters available with the command-line setup, and
Figure 3-11 displays the command-line switches available when running setup.exe.

Parameter Description
PIDKEY=CD_key CD_key is the key for the product. This is
required to set up SharePoint Portal Server
from the command line.
SPSROOT=path_for_files Path_for_files is the file path that defines the
installation location for the program files for
SharePoint Portal Server.
SPSSEARCHDATA=path_for_search_files Path_for_search_files is the file path that
defines the installation location for the content
index files.
