Chapter 32: Using Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 to Customize SharePoint Products 913
Figure 32-58 Data View with Conditional Formatting in Internet Explorer
Conditional formatting can also be used to control visibility. For instance, in our
previous example we could have chosen to not display the name of the company if
the City was San Francisco. The steps in accomplishing this are almost exactly the
same as the steps previously outlined except instead of choosing Apply Formatting
from the Create menu, we would choose Hide Content from the Create menu.
Conditional formatting can apply to only one field at a time; thus, it is not possible
to create a single criterion that will modify the style/visibility of two fields. To
accomplish this, you have to create two criteria. You can, however, compose a single
criterion of multiple predicates on different columns (such as underline the Company-
Name when the City=San Francisco OR City=Walla Walla AND Country=USA).
Data Views as Web Parts
At its heart, the Data View is a Web Part. This means that in addition to all the
formatting, grouping, sorting, filtering, and so on, it automatically leverages all the
features of the Web Part Infrastructure available in Windows SharePoint Services.
Specifically, this means the following:
■ Data Views support personal and shared views (when inside a Web Part Zone),
just like every other Web Part. This means that a user can make personalizations
that are visible only to him; the user can also customize the shared view
of the same Data View.
■ Data Views support run-time customization by using a browser-based interface
when inside a Web Part Zone.
■ Data Views have the standard set of customizable properties shared by all Web
Parts, such as Title, Height, Width, Frame State, and so on.
■ Data Views support Web Part connection authoring, but they require
FrontPage 2003 to create the connection string.
