508 Part VI: Administration of Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003
Summary
To change the owner of a portal site, follow these steps
1. From the home page of the portal site, click Site Settings.
2. On the Site Settings page, in the General Settings section, click Go to Share-
Point Portal Server central administration.
3. On the SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration page, in the Security
Configuration section, click Manage site collection owners.
4. On the Manage Site Collection Owners page, in the Site URL section, type the
URL of the portal site, and then click View. The information for the current site
owner and secondary owner appears on the page.
5. In the Site Collection Owner section, type the user name (in the form
DOMAIN\username) for the user who will be the site owner and administrator.
6. If you have a new secondary contact name, type the user name in the Secondary
Owner section.
7. Click OK.
To change the owner of a portal site by using Stsadm.exe, you must know the
URL for the portal site and the specific user name that you want to change. You can
use the siteowner operation to change the owner or secondary owner of a portal site.
The syntax for changing the owner of a portal area is:
stsadm.exe -o siteowner -url [-ownerlogin | -
secondownerlogin ]
In this chapter, we saw that the portal administrator has many responsibilities and
management tasks relating to maintaining a portal site. Each feature the portal site
adds to Windows SharePoint Services results in its own management requirements,
for which there are administration tools available through the Web-delivered Site
Settings page. First, the management of who can access the portal site, the level of
access to the portal site, and whether or not anonymous access is allowed can be
controlled. Next, management of alerts gives the administrator the ability to control
alert usage and helps users clear out alerts when they get out of hand. With the addition
of areas and content categorization features, management tools in the form of
the Portal Site Map and the Topic Assistant are provided. To help manage the ability
to target content to users that meet preset criteria, the administrator can use the audience
management links. Finally there are management tools to manage personal
sites as well.
