In addition, consider adding a separate subnet for online backup <strong>and</strong> restore<br />

<strong>and</strong> monitoring by adding additional NICs to each server to reduce the network traffic<br />

on the VLAN that carries the end-user access traffic.<br />

You can measure the traffic in the network by checking the SNMP MIBs of<br />

interface devices, calculated as total bytes per second.<br />

Network Load Balancing<br />

Event log records provide crucial information that can help you analyze <strong>and</strong> solve<br />

problems. Use the nlb.exe display comm<strong>and</strong> to display the most recent event log<br />

records produced by Network Load Balancing. For more information, see Chapter 4,<br />

“Windows SharePoint Services Architecture.”<br />

Windows Server 2003<br />

Windows Server 2003 comes with tools for monitoring various services, including<br />

the Active Directory directory service. This information assists you in determining<br />

when the directory service is experiencing a problem as a result of the operating<br />

system. Windows Server 2003 probes are used across all servers to provide information<br />

about the status of the operating system.<br />

Table 10-7 shows the most important operating system performance counters.<br />

You can observe these counters by using Windows Server 2003 System Monitor.<br />
