Websites based on Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies allow users to
add Web Parts to Web Part Pages. This chapter will introduce you to basic concepts,
which allow you to customize Web Parts and which complete the review of using
default tools—such as the browser and the Stsadm.exe command-line tool—and
using a text-based editor to set configuration parameters in files on the file system.
A Web Part is a modular unit of information that has a single purpose. For
example, the list of built-in Web Parts available in SharePoint Products and Technologies
includes the following:
■ SharePoint Portal Server 2003–specific Web Parts; for example:
■ Area Contents: Used to display the content of areas and topics.
■ Grouped Listings: Used to display listings in an area—that is, the link
items stored in an area’s Portal Listings list.
■ Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services–specific Web Parts; for example:
■ Members: Used to display a list of site members and their online status.
■ List View Web Parts. Web Parts that display a view of a list or library, available
on portal and Windows SharePoint Portal Services websites; for example:
■ Contacts: Allows you to display the Contacts list on a Web Part Page.
