58 Part I: Introduction to SharePoint Products and Technologies
More Info There is not room to describe all the steps required to perform
this customization in this book. For more detailed step-by-step instructions
on configuring SharePoint Portal Server 2003 with multiple languages, see
“Using Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies in Multilingual Scenarios,”
at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/office/sps2003
/maintain/spmultil.mspx.
7. From the Sites page, create a site for each language using the Create Site link
from the Actions list.
Define the search scopes for each language site by navigating to the Site
Settings page for the portal site, clicking the Configure Search And Indexing
link, and then configuring scopes for each language-specific area.
Firewalls
Windows SharePoint Services supports connectivity through firewalls. Depending
on your configuration, for external users to connect to the SharePoint server you
must ensure that the standard HTTP ports 80 and 443 on the firewall are open.
When using a firewall, you must configure SharePoint sites with Basic authentication
because Integrated Windows authentication cannot pass through a firewall.
Note For detailed information about how to best configure SharePoint Portal
Server with Microsoft ISA Server 2000, see “Announcing the ISA Server
2000 SharePoint Portal Server Deployment Kit,” by Martin Grasdal and
Thomas Shinder, at http://www.isaserver.org/articles/sharepointkit.html.
Application Coresidency and Installation Considerations
SharePoint Portal Server 2003 cannot be installed on just any server, because there
are Microsoft products that will interfere with SharePoint Portal Server and affect its
operation. For instance, installing Windows SharePoint Services prior to installing
SharePoint Portal Server causes conflicts. The following products also can cause
issues with SharePoint Portal Server 2003:
■ Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001
■ Exchange Server (any version)
