848 Part IX: Maintaining a Server in Windows SharePoint Services
Summary
You can use Wppackager to package and create an MSI for a Web Part solution.
In addition, while packaging the Web Part, you can specify additional permissions
to set for the Web Part during installation. This automates the installation of
Web Parts, ensuring components are deployed and code access security permissions
are applied to Web Part assemblies consistently and in a repeatable manner. Administrators
can install Web Part assemblies directly to the GAC or to the Bin directory
for the specified virtual servers according to the specified deployment plan. Administrators
can also easily remove the Web Part solution by using Add Or Remove Programs
on the front-end Web server.
More Info See the white paper “Using Wppackager to Package and Deploy
Web Parts for Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies,” by Parikshit
Pol, Andrew Birck, and Emilio Concepcion (Microsoft Corporation, September
2003).
This chapter completes the review of the basic concepts for Web Part Pages and
Web Parts and the customization of the default Web Part Pages and built-in Web
Parts by using default tools such as the browser and the command-line tool
Stsadm.exe. You can use Stsadm.exe to deploy Web Part packages to the GAC or to
the Bin directory for specified virtual servers. This allows you to deploy Web Part
packages across an entire organization or to only a limited set of sites, according to
your requirements.
