Chapter 15: Configuring Windows SharePoint Services 355
The following option can be set at the virtual server level and will affect all
sites on that virtual server:
The Self-Service Site Creation setting can be set at the virtual server level and
will affect all sights on a virual server. This setting, shown in Figure 15-3, allows you
to either enable or disable Self-Service Site Creation. Microsoft Windows SharePoint
Services allows members of the Administrator site group to create subsites off of
their websites by default. These subsites can by fully functioning SharePoint sites—
complete with a home page, document libraries, and so on—and they can even have
their own unique permissions. If administrators decide this is a capability they would
like to extend to users, they can enable the Self-Service Site Creation feature. The
user does not need administrator permissions on the server or virtual server, only
permissions on the website where Self-Service Site Creation is hosted. The user
simply enters some basic information and the new top-level website is created with
the user as the owner and administrator. When you enable Self-Service Site Creation,
you free yourself from having to create top-level websites on demand for your
users—they can do it themselves.
Note This feature allows users to create top-level sites, not just subsites
in another collection. Users with this capability can create entirely new site
collections.
Command-Line Administration
On occasion, you might want command-line tools to accomplish some tasks either
because it is not convenient to use the HTML administration pages or because you
want to automate a procedure. In such cases, you can use a command-line utility.
