Using SPIn
SPIn is a command-line tool that must be run on the Web Server running the target
SharePoint Portal Server 2003 machine. You must be a member of the Administrators
group to use the tool. To import the documents and descriptive information created
in the previous export procedure into a document library on a SharePoint site, open
a command prompt, navigate to the folder where the migration tools are installed,
and use the following command:
spin.exe .xml
In this code, is the URL of the SharePoint site where the imported
documents are to be stored, and is the name of the manifest file. It is
important that is the root URL for a SharePoint site and not, for example,
the URL for a document library or another component of a site, or a subsite.
To import the documents and descriptive information created in the export
procedure into a collection of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 portal areas, use the following
command:
spin.exe .xml /area
In this code, is the URL of a top-level SharePoint Portal Server 2003
portal area where portal areas are to be created and the documents are to be stored.
To use this format of the SPIn tool, you must have checked the Create one area per
folder option in SPOut when you exported the documents; otherwise, you will
receive the following error message:
Cannot import a folder (tree) exported as a document library into an area
hierarchy. Remove the /area option and try again.
