Tip Like any other Web Part, a Data View can reside either within or outside<br />

a Web Part Zone. A Web Part that is not in a Web Part Zone is called a<br />

Static Web Part <strong>and</strong> is subject to certain limitations in its ability to be customizable<br />

at run-time. It is common practice to put Web Parts inside a Web<br />

Part Zone, <strong>and</strong> we have followed that convention here.<br />

2. Click Insert Data View on the Data menu to open the Data Source Catalog<br />

task pane. (See Figure 32-48.) As described in the previous section, there are<br />

many data sources that you can use. (See Table 32-4 earlier in the chapter.)<br />

Notice that FrontPage 2003 has automatically created data sources for the lists<br />

<strong>and</strong> document libraries that exist in your Windows SharePoint Services site.<br />

3. Exp<strong>and</strong> the Database Connections folder by clicking the plus sign (+), which<br />

exposes the Customers on the Northwind data source that we created earlier in<br />

the section about the Data Source Catalog task pane.<br />

4. Position the cursor on the Customers on Northwind data source, <strong>and</strong> click<br />

the right arrow at the end of the name.<br />

5. Click the Insert Data View option at the top of the context menu.<br />

6. Save the new page <strong>and</strong> then view it in your browser. (See Figure 32-50.)<br />

As you can see, with a few simple drag-<strong>and</strong>-drop actions, your Web page can<br />

easily be extended with data from the source of your choice. The display comes<br />

complete with pagination. Because the Data View is essentially a Web Part, all the<br />

advantages of the Web Part Infrastructure—such as runtime customization, applying<br />

themes, shared <strong>and</strong> personal views, <strong>and</strong> so on—are available to the user from the
