4. On the Default Reader Site Group page, in the Find by list, click the option for<br />

the name or alias of the user or security group for which you are searching.<br />

5. Type the text for the name or alias for which you are searching, <strong>and</strong> click Find.<br />

All names or aliases starting with that text are returned in search results.<br />

6. In the Results box, click the users or aliases that you want to add <strong>and</strong> then<br />

click Add.<br />

7. Search for <strong>and</strong> add as many users as you want, <strong>and</strong> then click OK. The Default<br />

Reader Site Group page is closed.<br />

8. Click OK.<br />

Portal Site Alerts<br />

Alerts notify you when information that interests you is added or updated on the<br />

portal site <strong>and</strong> associated content sources, thus providing you with the ability to<br />

search in the future. You can define your areas of interest <strong>and</strong> identify how <strong>and</strong><br />

when you want to be told about something new or updated that you might want to<br />

investigate.<br />

Alerts are important tools for portal site users. As information from diverse<br />

sources is pulled together, sifting through so much content can be a time-consuming<br />

task. Alerts provide a proactive solution to staying informed. Alerts in SharePoint<br />

Portal Server 2003 build on the concept of subscriptions in SharePoint Portal Server<br />

2001, extending <strong>and</strong> refining the feature to make it even more powerful.<br />

An alert can be added to track the following types of items:<br />

■ Search queries<br />

■ Documents <strong>and</strong> listings<br />

■ Areas<br />

■ News listings<br />

■ Sites added to the Site Directory<br />

■ SharePoint lists <strong>and</strong> libraries<br />

■ List items<br />

■ Portal site users<br />

■ Backward-compatible document library folders
