Chapter 28: Disaster Recovery in SharePoint Products and Technologies 755
it will not apply a Windows SharePoint Services site template to the site, and
the site can be used to restore sites that were backed up.
■ Using the Windows SharePoint Services Object Model.
At this point, the SharePoint Migration Tool can be used to restore a site or site
collection. To restore a site or site collection, you use the SharePoint Migration Tool
with the following parameters:
smigrate.exe -r -w -f -u -pw ]
The –r parameter restores a site to a new location.
SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore Utility
The SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore utility is installed by default
when SharePoint Portal Server is installed. You must run the SharePoint Portal Server
Data Backup and Restore utility from the server itself in a single server scenario or
from any of the front-end Web servers in a server farm scenario. SQL Server 2000 Client
Tools must also be installed on the server from which backups and restores are performed.
The SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore utility performs the
following functions:
■ Backs up and restores all databases within the server farm or all databases of
a single portal site. That is, all databases except the configuration database.
■ Restores content indexes and content sources on the corporate portal site.
■ Backs up Windows SharePoint Services site databases.
■ Supports moving a portal site from one farm to another.
■ Restores an index server.
Note The configuration database is not included in the backup because it
would be impossible to guarantee a successful restore of it. The configuration
database that is to be restored would need to match the existing topology
exactly. Furthermore, existing team sites stored across all the content
databases would have to match exactly the sites in the configuration database
being restored. Because there is no way to guarantee this, it is useless
to back up the configuration database. The correct restore procedure
indicates that you must rebuild your farm—which will rebuild the configuration
database and ensures a new configuration database is created that is
guaranteed to work.
