Chapter 18: Managing SharePoint Portal Server 2003 491
Templates And Web Parts
This section of the Manage Security And Additional Settings page is analogous to the
Site Collection Galleries discussed in Chapter 16. The difference is that this section
pertains to Web Parts and templates installed and available from the portal level
down instead of only a SharePoint Services site’s Web Parts and templates, which
have a per-virtual-server focus. The administrator can add and remove Web Parts
and upload and manage site templates to the portal site. The advantage of uploading
Web Parts and templates to the portal site is that they become available to all
portal site users regardless of which server they are hosted on.
Note One thing to remember, however, is that the administrator will still be
responsible for installing Web Parts (and setting the Web Part security) on
each front-end server. There is no “replication” of Web Parts that occurs.
Discussion Settings
Websites based on Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services include Web discussions,
which are threaded discussions that allow users to collaborate on HTML documents
or on any document that can be opened with a browser (such as .htm, .xls, .doc, and
.ppt files) on a server running Windows SharePoint Services. Anyone with discussion
