Purpose and Use of Each Built-In Web Part
When you first install a SharePoint site, built-in Web Parts will be visible from the
Add Web Parts tool pane in the gallery and the Online gallery. This section
will describe the built-in Web Parts visible within these two galleries.
Gallery
The gallery contains Web Parts that are available to a particular site.
The number of built-in Web Parts installed in this galley depends on whether the site
is a portal site or a Windows SharePoint Services site and on the number of lists or
libraries created in an area or site. The built-in Web Parts are described in the following
sections.
Area-Specific Web Parts
These Web Parts are available on portal sites and My Site. They enable you to display
area-specific information. By default, the area information that these Web Parts
will display is specific to the area Web Page on which they are placed. So, for example,
if you place the Grouped Listings Web Part on the portal’s home page, you will
see the targeted links held within the Home Portal Listings list. You can, however,
use the Location link in the Current Area Override section of the Properties tool
pane to configure the Grouped Listings Web Part to use the Topic or any other area’s
Portal Listings list.
All these Web Parts have the Appearance, Layout, and Advanced properties
mentioned earlier, plus the Change Location property and the following Web Part–
specific custom properties:
■ Area Contents. Used to display the contents of subareas; by default, it is
placed on the Topics Web Part Page, where it is labeled Browse Topics By. The
custom properties for this Web Part allow you to specify the number of toplevel
columns, the number of areas shown by default, the number of listings
shown by default, the use of vertical layout for areas and listings and the alignment
of areas horizontally. These properties show top-level area listings, the
subtitle, Listings, area icons, listing icons, and descriptions, and they specify
the description trim size.
