Chapter 27: Securing an Extranet Using SSL and Certificates 731
To test that the home page of the portal site is accessible over HTTP and
HTTPS
You should ensure that you can access the home page of the portal site by
using HTTP and HTTPS with the NetBIOS name of the computer. To do this, open
a browser and type the URL for the portal site, using the NetBIOS name of the
server.
Note If you installed the portal site on a port different than 80, or if you
configured SSL on a port other than 443, you must include the port number
in the URL.
When you access the portal site using HTTPS, you might receive several warnings
that at this stage can safely be ignored, as follows:
■ “Revocation information for the security certificate for this site is not available.”
This warning signifies that your server is unable to connect to the certificate
server to verify that the certificate you have just obtained has not been
revoked. To continue, click Yes.
■ “The name on the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name of
the site.” The reason for this alert is the difference between the common name
in the certificate and the NetBIOS name in the URL. To continue, click Yes.
You should be able to see the home page of your portal site.
To require SSL on the portal site
At this point in the process, SSL is enabled. However, you can still use Hypertext
Transfer Protocol (HTTP) to access your site. To protect the extranet deployment,
you must require SSL so that the external clients have to connect to the portal
site using HTTPS.
Note SSL must be required on all front-end Web servers.
To require SSL, do the following:
1. Open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager. In the console tree, expand
the computer name node, and then expand the Web Sites node. Right-click
Default Web Site, and then click Properties.

Hooray! Your file is uploaded and ready to be published.

Saved successfully!
