Based on customer feedback and the experience of developing the 2001 version
of SharePoint Products and Technologies, Microsoft designed the next generation
of SharePoint Products and Technologies to use a common set of Microsoft
Windows Server 2003 services named Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services. This
set of services takes advantage of the performance, stability, and security features of
the Microsoft .NET Framework. You can use Windows SharePoint Services to create
and maintain many team sites. The following applications are based on Windows
SharePoint Services:
■ SharePoint Portal Server 2003
■ Document Workspace sites in Microsoft Office 2003
■ Meeting Workspace sites in Office 2003
■ Third-party developed solutions and Microsoft customer-developed solutions
SharePoint Portal Server 2003 is a server product that adds features you can use
to build and manage integrated, large-scale portal solutions on top of Windows
SharePoint Services.
Windows SharePoint Services is a collection of services for Microsoft Windows
Server 2003 that you can use to share information, collaborate with other users on
documents, and create lists and Web Part pages. You can also use Windows Share-
Point Services as a development platform to create collaboration applications and
information-sharing applications.
SharePoint Portal Server 2003 is a scalable, enterprise portal server that is built
on Windows SharePoint Services. You can use SharePoint Portal Server 2003 to
aggregate Windows SharePoint Services sites, information, and applications in your
organization to a single portal. In addition to the features of Windows SharePoint
Services, SharePoint Portal Server 2003 includes the following features:
■ News and topics
■ My Site, with personal views and with public views
■ Information that can be targeted to specific audiences
■ Index functionality and search functionality across file shares, across Web
servers, across Microsoft Exchange Public Folders, across Lotus Notes, and
across Windows SharePoint Services sites
■ Alerts that notify you when changes are made to relevant information, documents,
or programs
■ Single sign-on functionality for enterprise application integration
■ Integration with Microsoft BizTalk Server
