It is important to plan the Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services configuration
prior to actually doing the install so that you make the best use of your administrative
time. For instance, if you think through who needs access to data in the site collections,
you can capitalize on security inheritance and minimize the number of times
you need to set up security. However, most of the configuration options we will
discuss in this chapter can be changed once the site collection is created.
Configuration of a Windows SharePoint Services site is accomplished using the
Windows SharePoint Services Central Administration Web page. Site and Site Collection
Administration is accomplished using the Site Settings Administration Web pages
that are accessed directly from the Windows SharePoint Services site.

Because the focus of this chapter is on the administration of the Windows Share-
Point Services installation as a whole and not on specific sites, we’ll be using the
Windows SharePoint Services Central Administration HTML pages.
One way you can gain access to SharePoint Central Administration (shown in Figure
15-1) is to go to Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, and then SharePoint Central
Administration. This will take you to the Windows SharePoint Services Central Administration
page. If the title at the top of the screen references SharePoint Portal Server,
make sure you click the Windows SharePoint Services link in the left-most column of
the screen.
