Chapter 3: Installing Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 89
The Repair option is beneficial when you need to repair or restore the Share-
Point Portal Server binary files. A repair does not modify or fix the indexes or databases
in use by SharePoint Portal Server.
Troubleshooting SharePoint Portal Server
Installations
There have been documented issues with installing SharePoint Portal Server. This
section will outline the major problems that have been discovered to date.
For further information, refer to the Microsoft Support website at http:
//support.microsoft.com.
“Error 502” Error Message When Trying to Access SharePoint Central
Administration Pages
This message occurs when you run SharePoint Portal Server Setup to install Share-
Point Portal Server 2003 and MSDE on the server, and then click Finish on the Completing
The Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Setup Wizard page. The
symptom is that the Configure Server Farm Account Settings page of SharePoint
Central Administration is not displayed in your Web browser window. Instead, you
receive an Error 502 message.
This problem can occur if a proxy server is configured in Internet Explorer but
the Bypass Proxy Server For Local Addresses option is not enabled. SharePoint Portal
Server Setup does not look to see whether proxy server settings in Internet
Explorer are configured correctly on the server. The problem can also occur in situations
when you install Windows Server 2003 from a Remote Installation Services
(RIS) server by using a RIS image that uses the default proxy server settings for Internet
Explorer in which the Bypass Proxy Server For Local Addresses option is not
enabled.
To work around this problem, enable the Bypass Proxy Server For Local
Addresses option in the proxy server settings of Internet Explorer. To do so, follow
these steps:
1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Connections tab, and then under Local Area Network (LAN) Settings,
click LAN Settings.
4. Under Proxy server, select the Bypass proxy server for local addresses
check box, and then click OK.
5. Click OK.

Hooray! Your file is uploaded and ready to be published.
