After your intranet is up and running, changing conditions might require you to scale
out the server farm. This chapter provides guidance on when and how to scale out. It
provides information about how to monitor critical performance counters and analyze
log data to determine the best scale-out strategy based on server farm behavior. It provides
information about adding Web servers, search servers, and index servers. It also
addresses strategies for splitting search indexes to improve search performance and for
adding a dedicated Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services–based server farm.
Monitoring Server Farm Performance
This section describes the most important performance counters for gauging server
farm performance and deciding how to scale out your server farm. However, it does
not address scale-out issues related to custom Web Parts or applications. A scenario
that employs custom code might require additional monitoring or change the interpretation
of performance counters.
By monitoring a server’s performance on a regular basis, you can recognize
trends as they develop and prevent performance problems. Monitoring also helps
