808 Part IX: Maintaining a Server in Windows SharePoint Services
Security for Web Parts and Web Part Pages
Security for Web Part Pages and Web Parts is integrated with security for SharePoint
Products and Technologies, as detailed in Chapter 6, “Security Architecture for
SharePoint Products and Technologies.” A subset of rights affects Web Part Pages
and Web Parts, dependent on whether the Web page has been created and stored in
a document library or on a site. Also, there are rights unique to Web Part Pages and
Web Parts. This is detailed in the tables in this section. You can control who can do
what to a Web Part Page and the Web Parts on it by allowing, for example, the following
actions:
■ A site reader to view, but not to personalize, a Web Part Page
■ A site contributor to browse and personalize a Web Part Page on a site, but not
to make changes to a Web Part Page or its Web Parts for all users in shared
view
■ A Web designer to browse, create, customize, and make changes to a Web Part
Page and its Web Parts on a site or in a document library for all users in shared
view
If at one time any user has had View Pages or View Items rights but they have
been removed, the user can still delete personalizations made to Web Part Pages.
The Web Part will revert to its shared property values.
Note Although Web Parts are detailed in Chapter 31, it is easier to
describe the security implications for Web Part Pages and Web Parts
together in this section.
Once a user has personalized a Web Part Page, there is no automatic way to
replace these personalized changes by a system administrator or a user with appropriate
permission. However, a system administrator or a user with appropriate permission
can go to the Web Part Maintenance page as discussed in Chapter 31 and
delete all personalized changes there. Any personalized changes made by any user
will revert to the shared property values.
Table 30-1 summarizes how the different rights affect a user’s experience when
working with Web Part Pages and Web Parts on a site and in a document library.
